USEPA Operation and Maintenance Award
2nd Best Wastewater Treatment Facility
In the Nation
The Portage Lake Water & Sewage
Authority, with its Houghton-Hancock
Wastewater Treatment Plant located in
Michigan's Upper Peninsula at Houghton,
has been selected to receive a Region 5
USEPA Operating and Maintenance (O&M)
Excellence Award for First Place in the
Medium Secondary category for 2006. The
Houghton-Hancock plant is one of seven
facilities to receive Regional O&M
Awards this year.
This award is based primarily on the
following achievements (in addition to
excellent pollutant removal): (1)
utilization of the biosolids fertilizer
to enhance vegetation of a Superfund
site; (2) an outstanding energy
